I am hoping to examine the California prison system from a public health perspective, asking questions like, "What are the health outcomes of incarcerated population? What are the health outcomes of the correctional officers? What are the health challenges of these two populations? And their costs? What are possible cheaper - more effective - solutions?" Building off of those questions, I have decided to focus more on Solitary Confinement issues faced by California and Norway and how each system has worked to address the problems.

Quality of health and quality of life in prisons is extremely low at the moment, with the average correctional officer lifespan being about 55-57 years. The national average of lifespan in the U.S. is about 70 years.
